Chapter Two

Ivan sat in a chair reading by a crackling fire. Dressed again in his black jeans and silk shirt, his gleaming hair brushed and neatly tied at his nape, he looked almost human. Then he heard me stir and his clear gaze shot to me with the ferocity of a

predator.

My body responded with a hot wave of arousal. He smiled with cat-in-the-cream

pleasure. My mind caught up and I blushed, awash in embarrassment.

“How do you feel, my rose?”

Ashamed. Astonished. Aglow.

I sat up gingerly, wrapping the blanket around myself. “Good,” I answered,

hearing the surprise in my voice. “I feel amazing, actually.”

“Excellent.”

I slid off the bed and set my feet on the plush rug. Then I wasn’t sure what to do.

Talk about morning-after awkward. Which one of us should offer breakfast?

A couple of closed doors promised exit, but not to what.

He held out a long-fingered hand to me, palm-up. Raised his eyebrows when I

hesitated. Yeah, he could come after me easily. I quietly blew out a breath and padded over to him, putting my hand in his. It was warm and strong.

He stood, setting his book aside. Pride and Prejudice.

“You like to read Jane Austen?”

“Classic for a reason. Your comrades have been most generous in fulfilling my

requests.”

He wrapped his arms around me and dropped his head to kiss me. I must have

flinched because he stopped, searching my face.

“Problem?”

“Just absorbing the fact I’m just another thing to fill a need, like a book or a crimson bedspread.”

“The book doesn’t care if I read it, however.”

“Would it matter to you if it did?”

He laughed, soft, amused. This sated version of him could be deceptive. Like a cat, curled up and warm, offering its belly to be rubbed. Sweet and affectionate—until it shredded you with its claws. Ivan nuzzled my temple, brushing my hairline with

tender kisses, stroking my naked shoulder with a hot hand. “Will you attempt to

persuade me you didn’t enjoy our little feast?”

My body warmed under his touch, the lingering thrill of the pain and pleasure he’d

ravished me with pumping through my heart. I tipped my head back to search his eyes and he captured my mouth with his.

His lips moved over mine with gentle hunger. Cinnamon and mace, and a hint of

blood-salt filled my senses. His hands swept the blanket away so I stood naked in his arms. Ivan’s hands ran over my skin, sensuous, powerful. I sighed for the sweet

pleasure of it.

He broke the kiss and smiled at me.

“I think that answers the question.”

I was laid open, my desires no secret from him. Abruptly aware of my nudity while

he was fully dressed, I tried to pull away. His steely grip tightened and I stopped struggling. No escape for me.

“Why me?” I asked, nearly frantic, all that lovely, peaceful feeling shattering.

“Why did you volunteer?” he asked, neatly turning my question back.

I laughed, the sound escaping me like a sob. Tears unexpectedly poured hot down

my face. Ivan released me and had me wrapped in the blanket again before I saw him

move.
